She Should Run Off to a Great Start!

Since we started the She Should Run campaign, petition signatures have been pouring in from all over the country. Men and women, young and old, Republican and Democrat - everyone can agree on the importance of encouraging more pro-choice women to run public office.

Many of those who have signed the She Should Run petition included comments along with their signatures. A theme that popped up again and again was the need to create balance in our government. As Alice D. from Iowa put it:

The US cannot afford to squander 1/2 of its human resources. Fully including women in government and decision-making will ensure that the interests of families, children and civil society are heard and considered to balance the voices of wealth and power, which have long monopolized US policy.

Catherine B. is from Washington, which is represented by a woman governor and two women Senators. She has seen firsthand the benefits of the balance women bring to government:

We need the voice of women in the political field. This is a world made up of two unique kinds of human beings, and it's just illogical to have many important decisions made with only one voice represented in the majority. Please encourage more female participation.

Another theme was the unique skills and perspectives women can bring to public office. Charles J. from Pennsylvania has had a lot of personal experience with talented and successful women:

As a retired educator, both at the secondary and university levels, I had the pleasure of teaching a large number of very intelligent, very capable young females throughout my 36 years in a variety of classrooms. There is no reason whatsoever that all of this nation's political offices shouldn't be available and held by women. Enough of the Good Ol' Boys system!

But perhaps the most common sentiment expressed by the petition signers was hope - the belief that more and more pro-choice women will become public leaders and help move our country in the right direction. The success of women like Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Senator Susan Collins, and Senator Hillary Clinton has inspired a new generation of women interested public life.

As Brooke F. from Arizona said:

As a woman who is active politically, I want real representation in Congress. I want to see more women running for and winning office at local, state, and national levels. Maybe, with real campaign financing, I would even be one of those women!

With the She Should Run campaign, we are committed to giving women like Brooke the support, encouragement, and resources they need to run for office - and to win.

If you know a talented and successful pro-choice woman who would make a great public leader, visit our nomination page and tell her that She Should Run!

Together, we can make our government truly representative and achieve real progress in our country.
